Day fifteen: Matakana Bar and Bistro

It may be a long way to go for a beer but the Matakana Bar and Bistro is worth the trip. The Auckland region isn’t exactly known for its traditional kiwi bars but the Matakana Bar and Bistro fits the bill perfectly.  The colonial building built in 1903 features beer served in handles, photos of the local rugby team on the wall, token stuffed animals in the hallway, and plenty of outdoor seating for a summer session. It serves up kiwi fare throughout the day (the scallops are a winner). The bar also hosts some iconic events, such as the “shear a sheep, eat a pie, drink a pint” competition over Labour weekend. Next up is the annual seagull race on 28 November.  Mark it down in the diary – take in the race and enjoy a cold handle of Speights!
