Day seventeen: Tanuki’s Cave

A longstanding servant of the Auckland dining scene, Tanuki’s Cave is as popular as ever. Located next to the Town Hall on Queen Street, a journey down Tanuki’s stairs gives you the feeling you have been transported to a downtown Tokyo Sake bar.

The dining is casual, with intimate tables set along the outer walls and stools lining the bar. Tanuki’s specializes in Yakitori (assorted meat charcoal grilled on skewers) and Kushiage (deep fried breadcrumb skewers).  And no visit is complete without sampling the extensive Japanese beer and sake selection.  Finish with the green tea ice cream for dessert, washed down with a glass of plum wine.
