Never before has Auckland played host to such an impressive array of female tennis talent. The ASB Classic, usually the poorer cousin of the warm-up tournaments Australia hosts prior to the Australian Open, appears to have this year come of age.
Headlining the tournament will be Maria Sharapova, one of the biggest names (and grunters) in the game. I’m also looking forward to seeing two other talented Russians, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina. Between them, these three have won five grand slam titles. Defending champion, Yanina Wickmayer, is also returning to defend her title.
The tournament runs from 3-8 January 2011 at the newly revamped ASB Tennis Centre on Stanley Street.
