Day fifty one: Matariki Festival

Queen’s Birthday weekend saw the beginning of this year’s Matariki Festival. Over 100 events have been organised to celebrate the Maori New Year. Matariki is the Maori name for a small cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades, visible in our skies in late May to early June. This event signifies the beginning of the Maori New Year. The planned concerts, cultural performances and art exhibitions will provide Aucklanders with the opportunity to celebrate our unique Maori Heritage. Look out for this weekend’s Stars of Matariki concert at the Pacific Events Centre in Manukau.
